“When God gives you something you’re going to be showing or teaching or helping other people walk through, you’ve got to walk through it yourself.”

The Trench Reality:

Walking Through the Fire

Losing my brother Buddy has put me on the metaphorical bathroom floor of grief. I am an upbeat, happy person, but pretending the pain doesn’t exist isn’t faith—it’s denial. You cannot help people navigate the darkest moments of life unless you are willing to walk through your own trials and stay anchored in Jesus Christ.

God’s plan works, and you do not get where you are going unless you continue. Even when grief feels overwhelming, I stand on the truth that God never gives us more than we can bear.

The Command: Allow yourself to feel the pain without surrendering to despair. If you find yourself on the bathroom floor of life today, remember that it is a place you pass through, not a place you live. Trust God to pull you back up.

  1. In 2015 we, my husband and I, lost our 45 year old son to a very rare nerve disorder. He suffered terribly. He knew there was no cure yet he tried to never ask “why me?” I continue to feel overwhelmed at times with grief and ask “why my son? “. I’ve learned not to ask why Lord but what do You what me to learn from whatever I am going through.

    • Fantastic advice. In my book, I say that everything we go through is designed to draw us closer to Him. Because I believe this is true, I am doing my best to draw closer and closer and closer to the God of the universe. And to be happy knowing I will see my brother again. Thanks for sharing.
